Can a metalloid bond with a non-metal to form an ionic compound or ion?

I have a chemistry test tomorrow. We learned that ionic compounds or ions can only be formed with teh combination of a metal and a nonmetal. However, can a metalloid take the place of a metal? Also, is there an easy way to remember which are the nonmetals or metals on the periodic table? Thanks.

The quick answer is that ionic compounds are formed from metals and non-metals. If we go a bit further, we admit that ammonium compounds are also ionic. As regards metalloids, they touch the stair-step line you find on most periodic tables that extends from between aluminum and boron to the bottom of the table. All the elements touching the line are metalloids with the exception of Al. Some books might dispute this. In the case of compounds formed from the metalloids and non-metals, this is determined on a case-by-case basis and not the province of elementary chemistry courses.
